Commissioners Will Consider August Sales Tax Vote

White County wants to try again in evening the sales tax rate inside the county, proposing an August vote on the topic.

Steering Committee A commissioners decided the issue had a better chance to bring out voters during a regularly-scheduled election, rather than a special election.

Non-Sparta residents only would vote on whether to increase the county-portion of the sales tax from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent. Sparta’s rate already stands at the higher number. White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said this is the Local Option Sales Tax Rate.

A similar proposal to hold a March election on the issue died without a second at the County Commissioners meeting. The full commission must approve the August election date.
