Commissioners Approve Robinson To Negotiate Sale Of Landfill

The White County Board of Commissioners voted Monday night to allow County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson to negotiate the sale of the County Landfill with bidder Waste Management.

The board voted 10-1 to allow Robinson to move forward with negotiations. Commissioner Chris Brewington was the only dissenting vote with three Commissioners absent. Robinson said he was looking forward to taking the next step in the sale of the landfill.

“This has been a big project,” Robinson said. “This has been two years or more in the works. Finally, after a lot of hard work by the County Commission and exploring all the possible options, we get a chance to actually sit down with a company and start putting pen to paper and seeing what the numbers are going to be.”

Robinson, the Solid Waste Committee and the commissioners listened to two proposals through an RFP process from two companies last week.

Robinson said he felt cautiously optimistic going into the negotiations.

“Sixty-forty, I feel pretty good about it,” Robinson said. “Yeah, I think it’s going to be good. Moving solid waste from being a cost to the county to being a possible revenue-producing entity, so that would be great.”

Robinson said they came away feeling Waste Management was the best option.

“What I’ve saw through the RFP process, I’ve not had really any private talks with anybody about it yet, I think the commission made a good choice,” Robinson said. “They seem like they are a good solid company. They seem like they care about the community and want to give back, going to be a good solid partner.”

In other business the board approved budget amendments allowing the library to use a $2,000 donation as well as an amendment allowing the county to utilize a $90,164 grant for updates to a downtown Sparta facility. The board also approved the County Road list.

The board will next meet on February 20 because the regular February 19 meeting date is President’s Day.
