Commissioners Approve Plans For Sports Complex Expansion

The Putnam County Regional Planning Commission approved plans for the sports complex expansion project Tuesday.

Mayor Randy Porter said receiving approval marks one of the first steps in getting the project underway.

“TDEC is very particular on the way that this happens,” Porter said. “We’ve been sitting for months waiting for this process to start and it’s finally started, so we have to follow exactly the way they want it done.”

The $666,700 project will construct an access road to the complex and add two full-size soccer fields.

County Grant Writer Dawn Kupferer said the project will be in environmental review for at least the next 45 days.

“Once we get past that and if you guys approve today, we can go into contract with the state,” Kupferer said. “We can start bidding out probably in July or August.”

A $333,500 Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation grant will fund part of the project and Putnam County will provide a $255,000 match. The remaining cost will be covered with in-kind contributions.

“We’ve got some partners that have agreed to some of the work,” Kupferer said. “The road department, Algood, and different people have pieces of equipment that we borrow from time-to-time.”

Putnam County was awarded the grant in July, 2018. The project must be completed within two years.
