Clay Schools Requesting Bids For CTE Building

The Clay County Board of Education will begin the bidding process for the new high school CTE building.

Clay County Board of Education Chairman Benji Bailey said the board has a final design as plans have been approved by the fire marshal. Bailey said however the architect did have one concern with the final design.

“The only question brought up was the roof,” Bailey said. “It is a metal building and the roof that we have in the plans is a shingle roof and so I think part of thinking was there that he was afraid that the metal roof would leak.”

Bailey said the architect did give them the option to bid the project with a shingle roof or a metal roof. The board decided to bid the project with both options to compare costs. Bailey said he hopes to review the bids in the December board meeting.

“The metal roof that we’ve asked to be bid as well will probably be an increased cost to the system,” Bailey said. “So we will just evaluate those options.”

Bailey said shingles may be a cheaper option and prevent leaks better than a metal roof, but the board still wants to consider a metal roof.

“One we want it to be functional and we want it not to leak obviously,” Bailey said. “But we also want it to fit in with our current campus at Clay County High School, so that’s important but ultimately the most important thing is getting a good building, a sound building that will serve our school system for years to come.”

Bailey said the budget could ultimately be the deciding factor on which roof they go with.
