The Clay County Jail project is nearing completion of its engineering and architecture phase.
Sheriff Brandon Boone said the final plans should be presented before the county commission and sheriff’s department near Thanksgiving.
“There’s nothing we can do to speed it up at this point or slow it down,” Boone said. “Its got its own course of action at this point because there’s so many approvals its gotta go through. We’re fortunate and glad its got to this point because we’re in desperate need of a facility to house inmates.”
If the county commission approves the plans next month, the next step will be to seek the state’s approval. Boone said the county will start to take bids near late winter and construction should begin late spring.
The new 100-bed facility will replace the 14 bed jailhouse. Clay County officials received a $7.5 million USDA loan in June. Cope Architect Associates is the architecture company drawing the facility plans.
