Clay County Approves To Submit Grant Application

The Clay County Commission voted unanimously to submit an application tourist enhancement grant for further courthouse improvements.

The deadline to submit the TDOT tourist grant application is July 15. Mayor Dale Reagan said during the Monday meeting he believes it can be submitted in time.

“Basically it’s a narrative, you gotta put a good narrative out there,” Reagan said. “We’re trying our best to get the old historical courthouse recognized as a draw for tourists. We have folks that come by all the time.”

Reagan said the county has tried several times to apply for the $75,000 tourism enhancement grant. He said the county is currently using a $10,000 state historical grant to restore the courthouse windows.

The historic courthouse was built in 1870. Reagan said visitors frequently request tours of the 150 year old facility.

“We’ve not been able to convince folks at the state yet that, but we’re going to give her another good shot,” Reagan said. “Hopefully Lord be our helper and everything we might can get that done this time.”
