Clay Counter Volunteer Rescue Squad Hosting Open House

The Clay County Volunteer Rescue Squad is looking for new volunteers interested in helping the community.

The squad is hosting an open house on Saturday, and members of the community are invited to come meet the team, enjoy free food, and learn about the work of the squad. Captain Chris White said he hopes to recruit some new members to join their team.

“If you put your time and volunteer towards a rescue it helps better the community,” White said. “It betters the community’s and the citizen’s needs.”

The Clay County Volunteer Rescue Squad is a re-branding of the old team, known just as Clay County Rescue. After being closed for a short period due to lack of funding among other things, White said the squad is back and ready to help.

White said the rescue squad has had some issues recruiting new members, particularly because it’s a volunteer position. He said that the event on Saturday will give potential new members a better idea of what the team does.

“We try our best to show to show them what we can do and what they can do to help the community out and the surrounding counties,” White said.

To join the squad, you first have to apply. After you’re voted in, you go through training to drive the vehicles, boats, use the extraction equipment, and take certain training courses. White said he’s looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in the community.

The open house will be from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
