Clay Co Students Receiving Meal Boxes

The Clay County School System is taking advantage of a Baylor University program providing student meals.

School Nutrition Supervisor Laura McLerran said the Meals-To-You program brings food to students that have difficulty getting to a distribution point.

“The emergency meal boxes will be mailed to their home location every two weeks,” McLerran said. “There will be one box every two weeks. The food inside will be shelf-stable and doesn’t have to be refrigerated right away.”

Baylor University is a private Baptist school in Waco, Texas. Each Meals-To-You box contains 10 breakfasts and 10 lunches and are free to families.

“We’re a rural system and very spread out,” McLerran said. “There are very few locations where students and children could walk to a location and pick up meals. A lot are staying with grandparents or other people that may not have transportation to take them to a location to pick up meals, so this should be a big help for our families”

McLerran said Clay County distributes around 950 meals to students per day. This program will allow food deliveries until the end of June.

There was a lot of interest in the program before the deadline date on Wednesday, according to McLerran. She said the process to sign up was easy.

“(Baylor) set the enrollment window it was a very simple enrollment form for our families to fill out,” McLerran said. “We are in the process of getting everything verified, and the meal boxes should be coming out soon.”
