A simple knock on the door or phone call to an elderly neighbor can make a big difference during harsh temperatures.
UCDD Family Care Giver Sarah Martin said cold weather can increase symptoms of diabetes. Hypothermia also common since elderly people can not always feel the temperature.
“My most important thing I like to say is that it is always better to stay prepared in advance,” Martin said. “So especially when we know these temperatures are approaching in the area, it is always important to check in with your neighbors and make sure that they are properly equipped.”
Martin said questions about their heating system, food supplies and medication levels are a good way to gauge their needs. Last year’s major ice storm took the life of a 70-year-old Overton County man walking to a neighbor seeking help.
Martin said the tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers.
