Byrdstown Veterans Memorial’s Last Call For Names

Byrdstown residents have until next week to submit a veteran’s name for their memorial monument.

DAV Chapter member Billy Lee said they’ve been receiving names for five years.

“Well right now we’ve got 740 something [names] that’s being engraved. But we’re open now for more names to put on there,” Lee said.

The deadline to submit a name is February 7. Lee said the DAV chapter has been overseeing construction for about two years.

The fallen soldiers date from the Civil War to Afghanistan. Lee said submissions have come from Pickett, Overton, Fentress, and Clinton County, KY.

Veterans in these counties provide funeral honor guard services in the surrounding areas. Lee said this project wouldn’t have been possible without the community’s support.

“We have got a lot of money from the local people around and with donations. Everybody’s’ just been really good to help us,” Lee said.

Volunteer Electric and Twin Lakes have also provided funding for the project, Lee added.

The completed monument will be located at the Byrdstown welcome center off of Highway 111. The project should finish by Memorial Day.
