Byrdstown Dollar General Damaged After Tuesday Commercial Fire

The Byrdstown Dollar General at 8545 Highway 111 will be closed for a few weeks after a commercial fire early Tuesday morning.

Byrdstown-Pickett County Fire Chief Garry Garrett said his department as well as the state bomb and arson department are conducting an investigation to find the cause.

“The inside of it is real smokey and has a lot of heat and a lot of smoke built up in there last night,” Garrett said. “Stuff at about head level is deformed from the heat, and then down knee high is smoke damage.”

Garrett said at this time, no foul play is suspected, and the investigation is protocol for a commercial fire. Garrett said the building suffered minor structural damage and no injuries occurred.

“We received the call about right at midnight,” Garrett said. “It was blacked out on the inside, and we couldn’t see anything from the smoke.”

Garrett said the flames were mainly in the front right corner of the store. Garrett said all five fire departments in the county responded and stayed on scene for some three hours.
