Jackson County native Brad Halfacre will serve as the new Veterans Service Officer for both Jackson and Clay Counties.
Richard Accurso as well as four other local veterans on the hiring board made the decision Wednesday. Accurso said the Navy veteran showed an excitement to serve that the committee wanted.
“He seemed to understand that there is a need in the two counties to have a veterans service officer to support veterans, their widows and their dependents,” Accurso said. “When he was in active duty, he did the same type of things.”
Accurso said Halfacre will now prepare for a week long training later this month. On completion, Accurso said Halfacre will serve in Clay County on Monday and Tuesdays and Jackson County Wednesday and Thursdays.
“Of the four applicants, they were all very very strong candidates,” Accurso said. “I think any four could have done the job, but we were fortunate that we were able to get an individual that wanted to do it.”
Halfacre will be located at each county’s local UCHRA office depending on the day. Accurso said Halfacre’s length of service will be at his own discretion as long as responsibilities are fulfilled.
Accurso said the pay for the position is in the hands of the four municipalities located in the coverage area.
