Blue Devils 4-2 Behind Defensive Unit

The Jackson County Blue Devils have outscored their last two opponents 63-0 and head coach Sean Loftis said his team has not begun to peak.

Following a 35-7 loss to Clay County, the Westmoreland Eagles hung 51 unanswered points on the Blue Devils in week for. In the eight quarters since, Jackson County has not allowed a single point.

“We’re not playing clean by no means, but we’re doing a fairly decent job of tackling” Loftis said. “And we’re still missing some tackles and missing some assignments but the kids are just snapping clear every play.”

The Blue Devils defense has been tested the last two weeks, but Loftis said he is proud of the defenses ability to tighten up and buckle down when the opponent is in the red zone. This week he said the defensive preparation for Pickett County is no different than any other week.

“Continuing to get to the football, continuing to put pressure on their quarterback,” Loftis said. “And our defensive front has got to continue to kind of dominate that three yard area around the line of scrimmage.”

Loftis noted that he is not the sole reason for defensive success and credits his support staff with helping bolster a defensive unit that has held team to five points a game in their four wins. Loftis relies on Todd Petty, Alex Bray, Kevin Reynolds and Brandon Chaffin to prepare the players for Friday nights.

“It’s a total team effort,” Loftis said. “But when it’s all said and done the kids are the ones out making plays. And they’re enjoying it too, you know, that’s something we’ve talked about over the last little bit.”

The Jackson County Blue Devils’ four wins has already topped their last two win totals and with four games remaining, the Blue Devils have a chance for their highest win total since 2016.

Kickoff set for 7pm Friday.
