The Biz Foundry will host a ‘Small Business Boot Camp’ in Spencer later this month to meet with aspiring entrepreneurs.
President and CEO Jeff Brown said said the one-day session will help those looking to start their own business examine the basics and determine the right course of action.
“There’s the idea of… are you ready for entrepreneurship, what it’s like to own your own business, live out of it, those kind of things,” Brown said. “Do you understand the time commitment, do you understand those kinds of things, so it’s the typical framework of entrepreneurship. Then that moves into more of how do we build a solid business model that can actually become profitable and has real customers.”
Brown said the organization hosts similar events across the region and has wanted to bring their knowledge to Spencer for some time.
“We’d been wanting to do one in Spencer and the County Mayor’s office was very forward-thinking in saying that they wanted to host one there,” Brown said. “They called and we worked it out over time. We wanted to do this in Spencer to get the entrepreneurs up to speed.”
Brown said the small population of Spencer and Van Buren County as a whole doesn’t mean a business can’t be successful there.
“Literally, in a basement anywhere, if you can get to the internet you can build a multi-million dollar business selling online,” Brown said. “It doesn’t have to be a retail business where people come to your building. You can sell things everywhere. A lot of our talk is about technology and how to use technology to start a business that you couldn’t do 20 years ago.”
The session will take place Feb. 22 at 9 a.m. inside the Van Buren County Office Building, located at 121 Taft Drive in Spencer.
