Baxter’s Titan Project Receiving Permits to Expand Highway 70

Titan Development will likely receive permits next week to widen part of Highway 70 in Baxter for a planned residential and commercial project.

Mayor John Martin says the city and Titan needed to clear a few final hurdles in order to obtain the permits.

“We’ve been working on this for a long time and a lot of the issues were entrances and third lanes in front of the complex,” Martin says. “I had an email from TDOT last week. They feel like everything is secure now. There were just a couple of items they needed from Titan to finalize.”

Martin says obtaining the permits is only the beginning for the project as a whole.

“Once they get the permitting, businesses or whoever wants to purchase property from Titan as far as stores or whatever business you want in there… they’re ready to sell property,” Martin says.

The project is expected to bring apartment complexes and retail stores near the Highway 70 and 56 intersection in Baxter.

Martin says despite no work being completed as of yet, businesses are already looking at potential moves to the area.

“I talked to one [Thursday] and that’s where they want to be. They want to be at the crossroads because of the crossroads,” Martin says. “The business that they’re talking about will enhance a lot of people. If they go by there, they will stop and do business with them there. The traffic count there is what they’re really looking at. You’re talking about 8,500 cars that go through there a day. It’s a great location.”

Martin did not release the name of the business and said construction on Highway 70 would begin in the near future. Work on Highway 70 would include adding a turning lane onto the future development site.
