Baxter residents are focused on cleaning up the community this month as April has been dubbed Baxter Beautification Month.
Beautification Chair Jeanie Lee said with new homes and businesses popping up in Baxter all the time, there is more incentive than ever to look presentable. She said beautification is an ongoing effort, but working together for a month can make a huge difference. She said she hopes Baxter can set an example for surrounding towns and counties to follow.
“You have folks coming into the community,” Lee said. “Maybe they’re looking to relocate. Maybe they’re looking to move there or to open a business; to put their children in the school there. You want to be at your best if you can at all. It’s just a wonderful thing to do.”
Lee said she is encouraging people to organize neighborhood cleanups. She said last Saturday, the Upperman High School football team spent the day cleaning Reflection Park after a large oak tree fell.
She said she believes Baxter should be a community that its residents take pride in.
“I think people will look at if you take that much pride in your community,” Lee said. “You know, you’re taking pride in your businesses. You’re taking pride in your schools and churches and so forth.”
Lee said planting trees and flowers is a great way to improve the town’s aesthetic appeal. She said people should call their neighbors and get together to pick up trash from their street.
“It speaks volumes to other communities also,” Lee said. “We can be a leader in our county. You know, we can say, ‘Okay, here’s what we’re doing.’ And we can make our county better by cleaning up our end.”
