Baxter and Tennessee Tech are getting the chance to celebrate their 105th birthday, after the event was cancelled last year.
Baxter Beautification Chair Jeanie Lee said on July 1 that leaders for the school and city will speak about history and the current community. Lee said this is a time for pride and reflection on what makes Baxter a special place to live.
“I share this with our whole community, our whole county to have that small hometown,” Lee said. “That you can relate to each other and of the good and wonderful things that are happening and our history.”
The 129th Army Band of The National Guard are set to kick off celebrations at 1:30 PM on July 1. The ceremony will follow the music and conclude with a reception at the Baxter Depot.
“Just to share this as a community means a whole lot,” Lee said. “Of course we have the colors gold in Baxter, Baxter’s black and gold for our school and Tech is purple and gold. So that gold runs through our veins and what a beautiful color to have. It signifies to me true and loyal and giving, so we’re just glad we can celebrate this together with Tech.”
Lee said being able to have the birthday celebration is a reminder of how lucky it is to be able to gather and see your community again. Lee, Tennessee Tech President Phil Oldham and Baxter Mayor John Martin are all set to speak at the event.
