Bandwidth Expansion In Clay County Schools

The Clay County Board of Education is trying to expand internet services for all three county schools.

The virtual bandwidth was supposed to increase before school started. Director Matt Eldridge said during the Thursday BOE meeting, internet providers quadrupled the bandwidth Wednesday.

“What we have to do is see how [it’ll hold up],” Eldridge said. “We’re doing math testing right now, and we have to get that in, that’s a state mandate. We’re going to start, we got a schedule, we’re going to start phasing in a grade every two days so we can see how far up we can hold it.”

Eldridge said internet services will double within a few weeks. He said students and teachers have had to be careful when and how many log into the server, otherwise they cannot virtually participate.

“The Live, it’ll crash because that’s too much bandwidth for everybody,” Eldridge said. “But after we’ve dealt with the Live they can take those Chromebooks out and use them. That’s what we’ve had to tell them because if they pick those Chromebooks up when everybody has them that’s not enough bandwidth for everybody in our system. But when they’re at home it’s pulling off their bandwidth.”

There are over 230 virtual learning students only in the district.

Additionally during the meeting, board members approved the school director’s executive order in July to purchase three E/Stat Sprayer Backpacks. The total price tag was $12,585 and was paid for through CARES funds.
