The city of Livingston is considering a change to automated meter readers for the water and gas departments.
The AMR system was presented to the Board of Alderman Tuesday. Mayor Curtis Hayes said the presentation was very informative.
“It is just time to look at an automated system,” Hayes said. “The pay off on it will be in about five years, and no one would be losing their jobs. We are just switching them over to the water department.”
Hayes said the system’s automated leak detection will help with Livingston’s above average leakage problem. The estimated cost for installing the system is about $1.8 million dollars. Hayes said the city has until July of next year to decide.
“We are just taking a look at it,” Hayes said. “I wanted the board to be introduced to it. We have budgeted that in our budget, as well. We will see what the next couple months hold for the AMR system.”
Once the employees leave their position, the city will not rehire to fill the void.
