April Showers Bring Yard Sales

Spring brings flowers and rain showers, but what about yard sales? Soon enough yard sales will be popping up all over Cookeville.

If you plan to sell your winter wares within Cookeville make sure to purchase a permit.

Jeff Littrell directs the Cookeville Codes Department.

“The purpose of this permit is to keep people from running businesses from their homes or having a continuous yard sale and disrupting neighborhoods and causing traffic problems,” Littrell said.

Cookeville allows permitted yard sales to run for three consecutive days. Citizens can operate three yard sales within a given year. The city requires a minimum of 30 days between sales.

“When you apply for a permit you are entered into a database,” Littrell said. “So we know the date of your last sale.”

Any citizen who violates the yard sale rules faces a fine of up to fifty dollars. Court costs add to the fine as well.

Yard sale permits cost two dollars. If your sale gets rained out, Littrell said the city will provide a rain check by putting a different day on the permit.

To purchase your yard sale permit, go to the Cookeville Codes Department.
