Another Sheriffs Department scam in the Upper Cumberland, this time with a caller impersonating a Putnam County deputy.
Calls began Thursday. The individual will call, claiming to be Deputy Rowe of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, concerned about an active warrant against you. Sheriff Eddie Farris said the caller might request money.
“The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will never contact you and ask you for money,” Farris said. “If you receive a call like this, do not give them any personal information, hang up.”
Farris said anyone contacted by such a scammer should report it to the department at (931) 528-8484.
Around the holidays, a similar scam was working in Cumberland County.
Eric Brown of the Tennessee Tech Cybersecurity Education, Research & Outreach Center said scammers simply need one or two calls to be successful to make money on such calls.
