Allardt Taking Bids For Water Tank Rehab

Allardt currently taking bids on a rehabilitation project for its two elevated water tanks.

Project Manager Cain Reed said they will empty the tanks, blast the metal, repair any defects, and add a new coating system that will protect the metal and ensure clean water for the city. Reed said the local community should not see any differences in their water services while the work is in progress.

“The work will be sequenced where, you know, they’ll take one tank and do work on one tank, get it back in service and then start on the other,” Reed said. “Each of those will be about a sixty to ninety-day work period. That’s, you know, subject to weather and things like that.”

Reed said it has been twenty five to thirty years since the tanks’ last maintenance cycle. He said they hope to start the work around November and complete it in the spring of next year.

“The only thing I would say is the community could expect that there may be some noise in the general vicinity right around the tank during the blasting operations,” Reed said.

Reed said the project came about thanks to a non-competitive state grant Allardt was able to get for some $700,000.

“This is a known project that they wanted to tackle, so that’s kind of what spurred the work,” Reed said. “We expect to be right around the total for the grant funding.”

Reed said the improvements will allow the city to be in compliance with the latest requirements from the National Sanitation Foundation.

“It’s a good, safe drinking water storage system for the future of the community,” Reed said.
