The 29th annual Allardt Great Pumpkin Festival will be happening on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
Festival Chairman Cathy Jeffers said this event brings in over 10,000 people to see the harvest weigh offs, car show and music. Jeffers said because of other cancellations around the region, she expects a record number of entries in the weigh off.
“The big pumpkin contest, we have green squash, those are very similar in size and watermelons,” Jeffers said. “I think we have had one of the record watermelons weighed in at the Allardt festival and we have had several state records, not just Tennessee but the states around us.”
Jeffers said records for Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama have been set at the Allardt festival. Although, the weigh off isn’t limited to just those three fruits.
“We’ll have various things come in such as green beans, huge, long green beans, sunflowers,” Jeffers said. “Any type of harvest item that you have that you think might be a record, a big potato or something, we’ll find a category for it.”
However, Jeffers said this event would not be happening if they didn’t feel like they could meet state guidelines. Forcing the cancellation of the pumpkin pie, pumpkin roll, tractor show and more.
“We felt like we could meet those guidelines and provide some entertainment for people,” Jeffers said. “To come out after they’ve been in the house for as long as they have.”
Jeffers said they have had as many as 400 entries into the Clyde and Zelia Stephens Memorial Auto Show. Jake Hoot, winner of “The Voice” will be performing at 12:00 PM at Allardt City Hall.
