Tennessee drivers have just days left to ensure their license plates and tags are up-to-date if they still have the green mountain license plate.
Putnam County Clerk Wayne Nabors said starting January 1st, 2023, all drivers are expected to have the new blue plate that went into circulation this year.
“If you’re driving on the streets and highways of Tennessee your license plates have to be current,” Nabors said. “Violation of registration law, a ticket for that is probably upwards of $300 so it’s very expensive not to keep your license plate current.”
Nabors said if you have not received a renewal card in the mail, all you need to do is write down the license plate number or bring the registration to his office. He said they can issue a new plate to a driver quickly and easily.
Nabors said another change in plates this year will affect drivers with handicap plates. He said he was not sure if the handicap plates would be ready for the first of the year, but they are ready to begin issuing those. Nabors said handicapped driver plates that expire in December will just receive an updated sticker and will get a new blue plate next year.
“So as your plate expires in 2023, you’ll get a new blue handicapped driver plate,” Nabors said.
Nabors said to renew a regular license plate costs just over $5.
