The Algood Fire Department has invested in new equipment to help with extrication and improved safety in house fires.
Fire Chief David Judd said the $45,000 purchase includes a cutter, a spreader, ram, and a Jaws of Life. Judd said the city had been planning the purchase for about a year, as the department’s focus is on protecting the citizens.
“This is something that we can provide for our citizens, this is something that, you know, will help them,” Judd said. “That was a big priority for everybody involved, the safety and security for our citizens.”
Judd said that the new new equipment is battery powered, that can be carried anywhere. Previously, such equipment was gas powered. Judd said detaching the tools from the truck increases the chances of successful extrication.
“It was hydraulic which kinda tethered us to the truck,” Judd said. “We had to run it off of a hydraulic pump, and so there was only so far we could go before we have to send guys to grab the pump and take it to whatever scene we need it.”
Judd said the portability of the Edraulic Holmatro tools allows for quicker response in certain emergency situations.
“If we have a situation that we have to get off the roadway, and have to help somebody that way,” Judd said. “We can take the tools down there with us, if there off into a ditch or something like that.”
Judd said the new equipment will be beneficial for handling house fires. He said that removing windows and doors will now be easier than ever. The tools are designed to streamline rescue efforts and improve efficiency during emergencies.
