Algood will open bids for its sidewalk repair and concrete work next week with plans to target areas in the city’s master plan.
City Administrator Keith Morrison said he takes these pre-bids annually to have someone on tap when sidewalk projects pop up.
“As I find areas that need repair or if there’s smaller chunks or things that we come across. I don’t have to constantly bid them out by project,” Morrison said. “I can just have a pre-bid for pouring sidewalks and concrete. It allows me to use it as needed, throughout the fiscal year.”
Morrison said the master plan for sidewalks have been targeting Virginia Street and East Main Street. He said the annual bids he takes are done by the square foot cost and concrete thickness.
“Trying to complete sections of sidewalks and make our town more accessible to walkers,” Morrison said. “So that they have ways to get to Walmart, and have ways to get around downtown and more safely cross streets. We continue to try to expand on those.”
However, Morrison said with future plans for a new park in Algood, that will be a focus.
“With the new park coming in, we’ll want to make sure that we add accessibility and sidewalks to that area,” Morrison said. “Which we’ve got pretty well up and down Main Street. We’ve tried to complete on both sides and make sure that we’re ready and I think we’re pretty close on that.”
Morrison said one benefit to annual pre-bids is the ability to increase or decrease what’s being poured based on budget. The City of Algood will received sealed bids until February 2.
