Algood Plans For Next Phase Of White Plains Restoration

Algood is planning to have the latest round of restorations to the White Plains Historic Home completed by June 30.

City Administrator Keith Morrison said the plan is to solicit bids from at least three contractors.

“Address some issues with the flat roof and the gutters and some of the eaves and where there’s been a little bit of water damage to the ceilings,” Morrison said. “So we’re trying to work on that as well. We’re just trying to put just a little bit into the house at a time and try to clean it up and keep its historic value.”

Morrison said work is also expected to be done to the windows for weather resistance. He said this work is being funded through a $30,000 Historical Commission grant, with Algood providing a $12,000-$18,000 match.

Morrison said the first steps of restoration will be trying to paint the columns and ADA ramp. He said the paint has been donated to the Friends of White Plains.

“We just haven’t been able to get it painted with the weather and everything going on,” Morrison said. “We’re trying to work on that, we want to get the columns painted before the Easter event.”

The Easter event is scheduled for April 3, with support from the Algood Fire Department. Morrison said that Algood will supply the labor to get the painting done.

Morrison said Algood is still pressing forward on improvements despite receiving no bids the last time the project was put out to bid.
