Algood PD Continues Work To Address Speeding Complaints, Sees Some Improvements

Algood is continuing to address complaints from residents when it comes to traffic concerns.

Police Chief Dale Armour said that the department’s work had started to address concerns even before a town hall meeting on the subject last month.

“We are getting some complaints in some areas,” Armour said. “And when we put up the data boxes, it’s not as bad as it was originally indicated. We do have some speeding cars. And there are others that we put up that we didn’t have complaints on and realizes that we need to address those locations as well.”

Armour said that the areas receiving the most complaints include Dry Valley Road, Brookside Drive, and Cooper Road. He said that before Tuesday night’s council meeting, a member of the community told him she’d seen a decrease in speed along Dry Valley, but that there is still a time frame of around 3:00-5:30 p.m. where speeds pick up. Armour said he attributes that pick-up in speed to those returning home, but said that it’s a good time frame for his officers to monitor traffic and speed.

He also said that with school starting back up, they plan on increasing presence in school zones in addition to the crossing guards.

Armour said that the traffic itself is not a concern. He said that in recording traffic patterns, there was about one car an hour in a recorded 24-hour span.

He said that the goal of his officer’s work is not to issue people tickets but to aid in making the community safer.

“We’ve got children in town and people out riding bicycles,” Armour said. “That’s one of the great things about Algood is that we have a great community, so people need to be aware. Brookside for example, on Halloween they lost count at 660 kids that went through Brookside on Halloween, and they were mingled with cars. So we put forth a big effort on Brookside that night because of the amount of children.”

Armour said they have explored more permanent options, but have not confirmed anything with further with the city.
