Algood’s new online utility and property tax payment portal is up and running, allowing online, telephone, and card payments.
Algood City Administrator Keith Morrison said this is a big step in modernizing the town. He said customers will be able to see real-time data on their accounts to stay up-to-date on payments and account information. He said card payments will incur a 2.5 percent fee and a $1 flat fee will be charged for e-checks.
“Being able to get their customer history and a live look at their account to know when it’s paid and being able to log back in,” Morrison said. “If they can’t remember if they paid, they’ll be able to log in and look at it and see what their account balance is live, and so, I think that’ll be a big plus. We just think this is a big benefit for the citizens.”
Morrison said that with the previous software, residents had to wait for the city to make its monthly update to see current data. Morrison reminded those who have used the previous portal, especially with recurring payments set up, to create an account on the new software as the old portal has been deactivated.
“Automatic payments aren’t live yet,” Morrison said. “We’re working on that, but they can go in and pay right now. They just can’t set up recurring payments right now.”
He said the city spent some $900 on the new card readers, but that was the only cost in the transition. He said anyone struggling with the transition can go to the city website for more information.
“I think in the modern world, everything’s going to online, and so many people are making online payments and not coming in anymore,” Morrison said.
