The City of Algood will host its first ever gingerbread house contest this weekend.
The competition is in conjunction with Algood’s Christmas Vendor and Tree Lighting event. Parks and Recreation Director Roy Phipps said completed homes can be turned into Algood City Hall Friday by 4:00 p.m.
“We’ve got three different age groups that we’re going to do,” Phipps said. “We’re going to do 0-5 years old, 6-11 years old and then 12-17. We don’t have any parameters on the gingerbread houses. We hope the kids make them themselves.”
Phipps said entries will then be on display on the second floor of city hall. Phipps said the public will vote on which gingerbread project wins the gift card prize for each age group.
“One of the reasons we wanted to make it a public judging because we wanted the public to be involved in it,” Phipps said. “We just didn’t want a few of the employees voting on it. That lets people that live in this community get involved in this process.”
Phipps said children can get creative with their projects. Phipps said anything from a normal home to a train station will be allowed. Phipps said the overall goal is to let the kids have fun.
“We’ll notify the winner in each category I believe on the 6th of the next day city hall is open,” Phipps said. “We’re telling people they don’t have to do an entry form ahead of time. All they got to do is show up that day.”
Phipps said the vendor market will be open from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday with an official tree lighting at 6:00 p.m. Phipps said the market continues Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Algood City Hall is located at 215 West Main St.
