The Algood Fire Department have joined 500 other fire departments in partnership with the state to giveaway free smoke alarms.
To get your free smoke alarm call the non-emergency number to the Algood Fire Department or contact city hall. The Algood Fire Department will come out and install the fire alarms in your home. Fire Chief David Judd said the best place to put a fire alarm is outside of the hallway by bedrooms where people sleep.
“A small flame can quickly grow out of control and turn into a large uncontrollable fire in less than 30 seconds,” Judd said. “It is vital for you and your loved ones to establish a fire escape plan, have smoke detectors in your home.”
231,000 smoke alarms have already been given away across the state. Judd said along with the smoke alarm campaign, he is trying to get the message out that its important to sleep with your door shut.
“The rooms that are shut off, that are isolated from the rest of the structure, there will be minimal damage sometimes,” Judd said. “If nothing else, it gives you a few extra seconds to get to a safe spot.”
Judd said it is also important to make sure your house number is clearly displayed on your mailbox.
“That is one of the biggest problems I know I have,” Judd said. “We’ll get dispatched and you’ll spend time trying to look and find out where exactly the house you’re going to is, so if you have something that has your number on the mailbox, make sure its big, bold, and bright.”
Putnam County Fire Department and the Cookeville Fire Department are also participating in the program.
