Algood Council To Vote Tuesday On Raises

The Algood City Council will vote Tuesday on a $7,500 raise for all full-time city employees.

Algood City Administrator Keith Morrison said the city of Algood is looking to retain the individuals who serve the community. Morrison said the decision reflects the city’s commitment to ensure all employees’ wages are competitive.

“We had a council member just concerned that we weren’t being competitive enough,” Morrison said. “That were losing employees to other locations and other jobs. So they had requested we consider this $7,500 annual raise to make our salaries for our employees more competitive.”

Morrison said last year, the city had initially budgeted for an 11 percent contribution to the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS). Morrison said the actual match was over 14 percent, which resulted in a surplus for the city.

“The first six months of our budget are off on the retirement calculation,” Morrison said. “So that correction is included with the change to the budget.”

Morrison said that the new salary structure will be directly tied to the overall pay scale. Morrison said as a result, the starting pay for new hires will see an increase, while existing employees will also experience a boost in their salaries.

“So a starting employee would actually come in at a higher rate,” Morrison said. “So this is effectively changing all of the pay scale and all of the existing employees.”
