Algood City Council will decide the best options for the construction of a dog park fence Tuesday night.
Parks and Recreation Director Roy Phipps presented the council with prices for building a residential or commercial-grade fence, or accepting a bid and having contractors build one. He said a 200-by-200 five-foot residential-grade fence would cost the city some $10 per linear foot. He said a commercial-grade option would cost some $14.
“By going to residential grade, we do save quite a bit,” Phipps said. “Because we kind of guessed on, we don’t know where they’re buying their material but we’re looking at, on a 200-by-200, most of these guys are adding $7,000-$10,000 for labor.”
Phipps said the distinction between residential and commercial lies in the grade of fabric used and the size of the chain-link wiring. City Administrator Keith Morrison asked the council to decide on a price to bring to their meeting Tuesday and he will tell them how large the park could be for that price.
Council Member Ron Graves said the prices are about what he expected.
“I guess I don’t see the big advantage of going commercial or residential, myself,” Graves said.
Phipps said he said he hopes to be able to use just one 80-pound bag of concrete for each line post and two per corner post, a much cheaper investment than paying outside contractors thousands for labor.
“When we look at the bids that were submitted, most of those were some sort of commercial grade,” Phipps said.
