Algood City Council Could Consider Changes To Wall Street Traffic

Algood City Council will consider closing a portion of Wall Street between 5th Avenue and West Main Street.

That after the recommendation came from Algood’s Planning Commission Thursday night. City Administrator Keith Morrison said the city decided to abandon the street in 2006. He said that Hope Church had asked the city to review it for closure as it begins some reconstruction.

“What the possibility was of some kind of closure or some alternate street pattern,” Morrison said. “So as I started looking into this I found the ordinance to where it had been abandoned previously. And as we began reviewing it found that it needed a little bit more protocol followed to do it.”

Morrison said the church would like to make parking and green space upgrades. He said that would include new playground equipment for the public to use.

Morrison said the church wanted to know their possibilities before getting too far along in the construction process. He said the process will have to go before the Algood City Council for two readings and undergo a public hearing.

“I don’t know that we properly abandoned it to begin with so in reality, it properly never was abandoned and it never has been closed,” Morrison said. “It’s remained open for many many years even since the ordinance passed. This is just a request of the church before they finalize their master plan of some greenery updates and playgrounds, and things of that nature. Would we consider it so they know which way to move forward with what they’re doing and to enhance the green space across from City Hall.”

Morrison said this is just an idea to see where it could go and what the council would like to do with it.
