Van Buren Awarded Broadband Grant

Van Buren County will install laptops at three public facilities, thanks to a new grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

The $24,000 Broadband Community Ready Grant will be used to supply laptops to the Van Buren County School Resource Center, Burritt Memorial Library, and the Senior Center of Spencer. Senior Center of Spencer Director Darleen Hunter said the laptops will be very helpful as many seniors do not own a computer.

“I noticed it when they started coming to me and asking me if I could help them,” Hunter said. “If I could help them look up something or show them how to do something or how do you print this off, that sort of thing.”

Hunter said the laptops can also be used for research purposes and telehealth appointments. Hunter said most times people are afraid to ask if they don’t know how to use a computer

“It’s hard for them to ask sometimes,” Hunter said. “So we just make it open and friendly over here at our senior center and we will help them with anything.”
