Sparta City Council is taking bids to determine the costs for repairing the Sparta-White County YMCA pool.
Sparta Mayor Jerry Lowery said the YMCA’s pool has started to lose excessive amounts of water every day. Lowery said the city has helped make minor repairs over the years but it appears to be time for a long-term solution.
“We patched it a few years and it seemed fine but now it is worse and they can’t find the leak exactly,” Lowery said. “We had a company come in to do a study on it and they said listen we are gonna have to redo it.”
Lowery said the city will look at how much it would cost to repair the pool before committing to covering the cost. Lowery said if the pool is not repaired soon the pool could be shut down for the time being.
“I think we could get it done before they open up next spring,” Lowery said. “We need to look at it if we are going to have a pool next year. I don’t think that they would have a pool next year if we don’t get this done and so we are going to wait and look at the bids and see where the money is because we have not budgeted for anything like that.”
The city council will also be taking bids for a generator to be installed at the YMCA to make it a second storm shelter. Lowery said he would like to get that installed as soon as possible.
“We need to get that going and we need to get that installed,” Lowery said. “We have had it for like seven or eight months now and we just can’t find the workers and the people to get it installed. So we have asked several people around here so we are just going to open it up for bids and maybe someone outside of town will bid on it and maybe we can get it installed. ”
Lowery said he is not sure how long it would take to get the generator will be installed. Lowery said the city has budgeted for the installation cost and is just waiting for someone to take on the project.
