Van Buren Student Anglers Competing

This weekend ten students from Van Buren County Middle and High School fishing team are heading up to Dale Hollow Lake in Celina to compete in their first tournament of 2024.

In her first season as the team’s head coach Tiffany Mooneyham said it is an exciting time for the Eagle anglers. With eight middle schoolers and two high schoolers making the trip, Mooneyham said the team currently lacks experience when it comes to these tournaments.

“I would say my middle school team, this will be their first ever big tournament,” Mooneyham said. “They may have fished with family and stuff like that off the banks. But, being in a boat with a boat captain, this will be there first experience with that.”

On the high school side, Chloe Roberts will also be making her first tournament debut and Bryson Mooneyham is the lone angler with experience as he has been fishing in these types of tournaments for four years. Mooneyham said the message to the team before the tournament is to just relax and enjoy yourself.

“Just go out there and do the best they can,” Mooneyham said. “Have fun and keep those lines tight.”

This weekend’s tournament expects about 30 other schools competing from across the region. Mooneyham said since this is just the Eagles first dip into the season, she expects them to steadily progress and learn as the season goes on into the winter and spring months.
