Gainesboro Aldermen approved an ordinance to increase court costs and adopt e-citations Thursday night.
Gainesboro Police Chief Michael Smith said adopting the e-citations will allow the city to charge $5 for each conviction and help the city build up the fund. Smith said e-citations would be easier to use than handwritten citations.
“We had that clerks meeting with MTAS down here with everybody,” Smith said. “He said if we wanted to get e-citations, which we could write the citations in the vehicle or ordinances inside the vehicle and print it off and do that.”
The court costs increase more than doubles the current costs, jumping from $70 to $150. Gainesboro Mayor Lloyd Williams said court costs were raised to keep up with inflation.
“We try to offset our costs of the court and we are going to probably add some more dates,” Williams said. “So for the the future court expenses we looked at our numbers and everything, we needed to go up just to cover our costs.”
Williams said costs do not have any additional fees and just consist of a base cost increase. The ordinance for e-citations will be re-evaluated five years from the adoption date.
