Multiple Police Agencies Gather In Putnam County To Train For Major Emergencies

Multiple police agencies across the region gathered at Monterey’s Heritage Academy on Tuesday to train for emergencies like active shooting events.

Captain Darrin Stout of the Cookeville Police said 12 agencies were present for the training. Putnam, Overton, Cumberland and Fentress county represented the Upper Cumberland at the event. Stout said the training allowed for multiple agencies to get experience working together.

“There’s the chance if they have a big event they will have two or three counties there with the potential to respond,” Stout said. “So we can get together and give us an opportunity to talk about how we can handle and quickly resolve the incident.”

Stout said training events this focused on something this specific is rare. He said the biggest take away from the training was seeing what processes other agencies utilize when training for mass shootings and similar events.

“It’s always good to get an opportunity to train with or meet folks from different agencies, because depending on the size of the event that may happen, it’s good to have made those contacts before that happens and just an opportunity to see what other folks are doing,” Stout said.

Stout said the Cookeville Police also got to share their best practices with other agencies.

“It was an opportunity for us to show some of the surrounding agencies what is being trained here in Putnam County as far as a response to a mass event or an active aggressor,” Stout said. “As far as, how we would deal with the incident and how we could quickly and safely get medical treatment for those who might be injured.

Stout said it was a unique experience to have so many agencies on hand sharing training tactics. Stout said it was one of the larger training events he has attended.
