Doyle Volunteer Fire Department hosting Hazardous Materials training classes starting July 20.
Fire Chief Jason Sparks said the training is not required for volunteer firefighters, but it is required for those firefighters seeking certification. He said the classes improve awareness and evaluation and handling skills in dealing with hazardous materials.
“We handle small quantities or small incidents that are hazardous materials,” Sparks said. “But it’s pretty rare, to be honest. You hope you don’t have to use it and it is pretty rare for the most part to get into major hazardous materials incidents.”
Sparks said they are hosting a Hazardous Materials Awareness Course and Hazardous Materials Operations Course.
Sparks said the awareness portion requires evaluation and having an awareness of what support needs to be called out while handling the situation as a first responder. He said the operations portion gets into setting up isolation distances, the proper protective equipment, isolation zones, and evacuation zones.
Contact Chief Sparks to reserve a spot at (423) 341-3101.
