A new outdoor recreation rental facility at Meadow Creek Park the latest part of Monterey’s efforts to fulfill its master plan.
Cultural Administrator Rafferty Cleary said some seven miles of mountain biking trails are completed, with 13 miles planned for the future. He said the most important part of the master plan is the connectivity of the park, including the trail system that loops around the entire 90-acre lake.
“We had to get that underway and Upper Cumberland SORBA took off and of course, they were working on it before the master plan got completed, but really cranked it up in the past year,” Cleary said. “That’s the most important part, it’s the connectivity of the park, there’s a secondary entrance of course, so that trail is going to be really key getting folks foot-traffic wise up to that second entrance.”
Cleary said next year they are looking at plans to create camping opportunities. He said those locations are scoped out throughout the park in master plan.
Cleary said they have many ideas laid out in the plan, but it remains to be seen what comes to fruition. He said they span from as bold as a fire tower at the highest point of elevation, to a zipline, to boardwalks across the lake, to a historical coal mine trail.
“There’s all kinds of ideas out there, we just need to start knocking them off,” Cleary said. “And one example of them, the Outpost with mountain biking and kayak rentals, that’s one idea that we’ve knocked off.”
