4-H Summer Camp Signups Now Underway

Now is the time to sign up for 4-H Summer Camps across the Upper Cumberland.

4-H Youth Development Agent Shelby Boyer said camp teaches new skills, encourages kids to make new friends, and make connections with kids from other counties.

“They learn to be away from mom and dad for a week,” Boyer said. “They learn new skills just in taking care of themselves and that kind of stuff too. But it’s a fun great event. And they don’t even realize how much they’re learning while having so much fun.”

Boyer said activities include a rifle range, a zip line, canoeing, fishing, archery, swimming, and arts and crafts like tie-dyeing and wood work.

Boyer said kids get money to use at camp which is another opportunity for learning.

“So they learn how to keep up with that and not spend it all in one spot,” Boyer said. “So they learn how to manage their money that way.”

Boyer said Van Buren County’s week of camp is June 19-23.  She said camp sign-ups are going on now. She said scholarship applications are due May 5 and regular sign-ups continue through May 29. Check with your local 4-H office inside the UT Extension Officer in your county.

Boyer said camp staff always plans fun events like relay games and yard games.  She said the last night they always have a dance and a movie.

“Just a lot of fun events they don’t usually get to do at home and school,” Boyer said.
