Van Buren County Commission approved a new agreement to maintain the old county landfill.
That after dismissing her previous company, architect firm Farmer Morgan. County Mayor David Sullivan said Farmer Morgan had previously done work at the landfill and according to UT Agricultural Agent Chris Binkley, and the grass they used was not suitable.
“When you’re using a grass that doesn’t even grow in your region,” Sullivan said. “And you’re charging such a high price for it, something is wrong with somebody’s specs.”
Sullivan said the firm proposed a 30-year update plan that included a $300,000 grass cover.
Sullivan said Chuck Burgess, a civil engineer who used to do this work, said that the landfill had closed in 1996, and that nothing needed to be done except water well testing.
Sullivan said after contacting a state landfill contact, they informed him that the county simply needs to test that water well every five years.
