Two Algood police officers saved the life of a man who had overdosed on heroin Friday evening.
Police Chief Dale Armour said the department has partnered with the local drug coalition to receive training on administering Narcan. He said opioid treatment is the first line of defense when officers see an individual in need.
“One I rolled on a couple of months ago, the guy literally was blue sitting on the couch, it took four shots of Narcan to get him to start to move around, EMS got there and gave him additional doses, and within five minutes he was standing up talking,” Armour said. “It’s kind of a scary, unique way to watch things happen.”
Armour said Narcan training is very simple and that anyone could do it. However, administering Narcan is only a temporary fix, and once administered, the individual should seek medical care immediately.
Armour said the need for response to overdose incidents increases and decreases every so often. He said they haven’t responded to one in several months, but that he’s noticed heroin has been on the rise in Algood.
