Putnam Sees Lowest Solid Waste Write-Offs In Several Years

The Putnam County Solid Waste Department ended the fiscal year with the lowest amount of write-offs in recent years.

That means companies that use the county landfill have paid the majority of dues. Mayor Randy Porter said a single factor resulted in just $806 of debt.

“More construction waste,” Porter said. “I think all of the construction companies are so busy that you aren’t having them go out of business and not able to pay their debts, so I think most of them are paying their debts now.”

Porter said usually, the county has to pay several thousand dollars for solid waste write-offs. Porter said this year was the lowest that he can remember.

“That’s where we have companies that bring in their construction waste to the landfill, and they pay a fee per ton to dump there,” Porter said. “Every once in a while we have a business go bankrupt and do not pay their debt.”

Porter said the practice of write-offs is something that is required by auditors. Porter said the action brings the dues off the books, but the county still tries to collect the debt.

“It was a real low amount for solid waste,” Porter said. “They’ve done a real good job.”
