Algood Middle School’s Garden Class will host a garden sale this Tuesday.
STEM Teacher Wren Goedken said the sale would have perennial and annual flowers, strawberries, and garden veggies. She said that all of the products have been grown by her students.
“They get a lot of personal responsibility,” Goedken said. “They all get assigned a garden bed and also a particular tree that they’re responsible for taking care of. So they know what’s in it and they know what their needs are, and they get to make the decision. So they get a good bit of ownership over what they’re doing.”
Goedken said that it also helps them learn business skills. She said that the students have been put in charge of planning the sale itself.
“And it’s good teamwork skills,” Goedken said. “They’re working together, they’re accomplishing goals together, because the weeding and the watering and the tending, they all have to work in concert together. So it’s a good group effort.”
Goedken said that the students will have 10 tables set up by the football and athletic field from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. She said that because it’s in honor of Mother’s Day, all moms can go home with a free plant.
Goedken said the sale serves as a fundraiser for the Algood Middle School Garden, Nature Trail, and Arboretum.
