Sparta Aldermen Approve Budget Amendment For HVAC Replacement

The Sparta Board of Aldermen approved repurposing budgeted money to replace a dead HVAC unit at Fire Station 2 Thursday night.

City Administrator Brad Hennessee said the fire department has the money for the replacement but was budgeted for Fire Station #1.

“The unit is completely out,” Hennessee said. “It’s over 20 years old and there has been a significant amount of repair work done on it over the last could years since I’ve been here, so it doesn’t make sense spending anymore more money on that unit.”

Hennessee said three estimates were received. Hennessee said the roof top unit would cost about $8,000. Hennessee said a crane service will be required to make the replacement.

“We haven’t had time to evaluate the bids, but our process on that will be the type of the unit, the warranty and the experience with the vendors in the past,” Hennessee said.

Hennessee said with the Board’s approval, he will make a decision on the best unit Friday. The purchase was mentioned under new business during Thursday’s meeting. Hennessee said,”I don’t like bringing things to the board in new business that involve purchasing, but sometimes information doesn’t come in on time.”

Mayor Jeff Young said the final information on the prices did not come in until Thursday.

“We did talk about this Monday when we were working on the agenda, but we just did not have the information in front of us,” Young said.

Hennessee said with the next Aldermen meeting three weeks away, the matter needed to be addressed Thursday.
