Van Buren BDS Center Closed For Land Sale, New Site In The Works

Van Buren County set to close on its BDS property sale Monday.

Mayor Greg Wilson said nothing has changed with the property deal since the county commission approved it in February. Wilson said the convenience center on the land has closed as a result, so a temporary site is in the works.

“We were going to be just right off 111 just a little bit,” Wilson said. “We’ve got some extensive work that’s going to need to be done first, so we’re going to set up the site just off Baker Mountain Road.”

Wilson said the temporary site will likely be used for the spring season. During that time, county workers will prepare the new Highway 111 site. Wilson said the location needs power and road work.

“A three-phase to put in there, so we got a little bit of work to do there, so it’s going to take a little longer than what we anticipated,” Wilson said.

A Nashville-based non-profit will purchase the land and building for $220,000. Wilson said the Van Buren County School System will receive $100,000 from the deal.

Wilson said the county commission approved the giving of the money last year. Wilson said the payment is meant to boost the system’s budget and is not related to the Fall Creek Falls Inn closure.

“The school is doing fine financially,” Wilson said. “They’re doing good, but that was still passed by the commission, so therefore, we will take care of that Monday afternoon.”

Wilson said the remaining funds will go into the county’s general fund.
