Celina K-8 Celebrate Improved Math Skills and Strong Reading Skills

Celina K-8 is no longer a target school because of its success in math during the last testing cycle.

Tennessee targets schools for improvement when there is poor performance in a subject. Principal David Maxfield said the school took its math score from a one to a three.

“That was huge, that was a huge celebration here,” Maxfield said. “Then our literacy scores being a five overall in the school and with literacy and math combined was a total composite of five. That’s a big mark for us.”

Maxfield said the school spent several years as a target school for poor math performance. Maxfield said getting these scores is a huge relief during a time when Tennessee is emphasizing schools to focus on reading and math.

“Every test that you take has reading as a part of it, even math,” Maxfield said. “So it’s very important that we push the literacy so that our students can read and understand. So that they can do well on the tests.”

Maxfield said credit goes to the teamwork it took during the pandemic to achieve this success. He said with schools being able to stay open, students and teachers achieved what they set out to do.
