Hazardous Household Waste Drop-Off At Overton Fairgrounds Saturday

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation will provide a mobile hazardous waste collection service at the Overton County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

Solid Waste Director Gary Smith said collection service will take anything from household cleaners, to pool chemicals, to paint thinner. Smith said it’s important to dispose of hazardous waste properly.

“Mainly just keep it away from the other trash when you throw it away,” Smith said. “So if it’s something that’s hazardous, you don’t need to be mixing it with all the other trash that you throw away, it needs to be kept separate.”

According to data from TDEC, more than 360,000 Tennessee households have disposed of more than 23 million pounds of hazardous waste material. The service will not accept ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, or empty containers that should be disposed of normally.

Smith said that the event will be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
